As a motoring solicitors travelling around the country on a daily basis we see countless examples of very poor driving by a whole variety of people. The one that annoys us the most has to be the middle lane hogger on the motorway. What gives the motorist the idea that it is the right thing to do to sit in the middle lane of a motorway when the inside lane is clearly free and available.
Is it ignorance on the part of a motorist, is it arrogance that they think the rules of the road do not apply to them or is it that they are scared of losing their masculinity by being seen to drive in the inside lane? I would advocate, as they do in America, both undertaking and overtaking. This would make people more aware of the traffic all around them instead of blindly just sitting in the middle lane knowing that they only have to concern themselves with traffic overtaking them on the outside. Those people living in blissful ignorance would then have to sit up and take notice of other road users.
In relation to this, I would advocate that instead of the police simply sitting on motorway bridges pointing speed guns at motorists they should get off their revenue raising backsides, get into their high powered expensive motor vehicles and stop motorists and give them some education about the rules of the road and maybe a few notice of intended prosecution producers. This would probably have a greater impact on driver awareness and road safety for which we should all be thankful.
I would particularly also like to see HGV vehicles limited to lanes one and two on the motorway where there is four lanes. To see an HGV struggling up a hill at 56mph in the third lane of a four lane motorway inevitably leads to lanes one and two being completely free and a whole load of traffic trying to get past the slow moving HGV.
