Organising business meetings when you work from home can be a nuisance as I found out yesterday when I had a meeting with a customer. They sent a four man party and the meeting ran on for in the region of four hours. When you work from home, as I do, room may be a bit limited. For instance I make use of a small office where I undertake most of my duties, It is just large enough for one person and a computer so I can complete my online jobs. But when arranging meetings the room is much too small and has no suitable chairs.
Luckily I have a adequately sized dining room. It is a room which is exclusively used for entertaining, when we have friends over for instance. So using it for very occasional business meetings is acceptable. I wouldn’t want to work from home permanently from a dining room as I would need to put away all my office stuff on a regular basis, but for a meeting it was perfect. The one difficulty was that I needed to move my computer from my office to the dining room. Luckily, my internet connection is wireless, so the fact that there’s no telephone connection in the dining room was no problem.
In fact the whole arrangement looked very corporate, rather like a boardroom, used only for special visitors. It did however highlight one shortcoming, my computer screen is only 20 inches. That is perfect for most work from home duties carried out from my desktop. But for display in meetings it’s far too small. So in anticipation of my next meeting I will get hold of a bigger screen. I may get a separate additional screen, which I can keep tucked away in the dining room ready for use, or I may go for a brand new computer like an Apple Mac with a 27 inch screen built in.
